Federal Government Grants For College Students
A grant is like a scholarship, in that it is free financial aid that one is not required to pay for. A federal government grants is aid that is given to the student by the government, where the student does not have to pay it back. The aid is, therefore, given freely. This is why, it is referred to as a, college grant.
In order, for a college student to get these free government grants, that the student has to have certain qualities. Specific formalities have to be gone through, before a student can qualify to get a student grant. Some of these qualities include economic need, academic requirements and the status of the student. It is however important to note that, in most cases, grants are not necessarily based on the financial status of the student’s family. Some grants are tied to academics, while others are tied to character of the student. The qualities required will therefore depend on the specific college grant to be awarded.
There are basically two types of the federal government grants for college students. These are the need based grants and the merit based grants. The former, mainly focus on the financial status of the students, and if the students are able to pay for their own education; while, the latter focus on the academic performance, and excellence of the students, in the period before the application for the grants.
The federal government is one of the leading grant providers and is often relied upon by many students. The US government college grants also known as school grants for students are also divided into two main types.
The first, and most common grants, are known as Federal Pell Grants. This is federal funded, and mainly focuses on, providing financial assistance to undergraduate students, who are disadvantaged financially. Another type of federal grant, is the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant program (FSEOG). It is mostly awarded, to students that have the most need, for financial assistance.
Another type of grant, is the Federal funded, work study program. This helps students find jobs,while they are studying. In this way, the student is helped to earn some money that they can use for their college education.
Students who, have at one time served in the military, also have a particular type of grant, that may be awarded to them. This is referred to as, the military Montgomery. It is, therefore, noted that, the federal government grants for college students are given freely to all who need them. They may be awarded as a result of financial need or on merit. Students who qualify to get these grants, can, therefore, apply for them.
