MANY YEARS AGO people thought that there were about 200 different kinds of plants in the world. Today botanists (scientists who study plants) have been able to name almost 400,000 kinds of plants. About 2,000 more kinds of plants are being discovered or developed every year.
Each kind of plant has a scientific name. Most people do not use these names, though, but call plants by their common names. One plant can have many different common names, which are used in different places.
